I’m a pretty big parrot person – I own two birds and regularly foster a third parrot for a local rescue organization. When it comes to these animals, especially those with the ability to speak and mimic speech, it’s easy to attribute human characteristics to them. Personifying these creatures, even though they are intelligent, can be dangerous to human-animal relations. When we treat birds like they think and behave like people, misunderstandings and behavioral problems often arise.
All the same, it can be fun to smile to ourselves at some of the very human-like behaviors these guys exhibit. Take these two for example: the blue bird (an Indian Ringneck) says, “What’s wrong? Gimme a kiss!” to a smaller, injured bird (a cockatiel). It’s hard not to feel a little warmth in our hearts at this moment of sweetness. I’ll allow it.
