I composed a tweet the other day. I wrote about how I wanted to be the Next [Insert Famous Urban Fantasy Author Name Here]. I listed several writers with chops and the fame and the sales numbers that I want for myself someday. I have every intention to succeed, you see. I will keep working my butt off until I do (because talent is great and all but there’s nothing like hard work and dedication).
Then a friend replied to my tweet and kind of burst my bubble. “Don’t try to be [famous writer],” he told me. “Be you. Be better than them. Because you are.” Well, it was certainly the nicest bubble pop that I’ve ever experienced, paired with a nice ego massage.
